This is for our children...their children...and their children. This is for our family...this is for us!
Originally, this blog was my wife's, but I stole it since she stopped using it. So, now it will be a place for both of us to write and journal our experiences during this journey of getting healthy. For the both of us its more than just losing weight. Yes, we both want to be thin, but more importantly we want to be around for eachother and our children for a long, long time. We want t show our children that it just isn't okay to treat what He gave us so poorly...
We have stopped making excuses and are ready to face the challenge...are you?

13.1 Miles

Yesterday, Jessica hit the gym late in the day- 45 minutes on the stair stepper and 25 minutes of lifting with a focus on my shoulders and upper traps.  Then it was home to see the kids for a few before Jessica dropped them off at grandma's house.  See the kids were headed to grandma's so we could have a chill night. We had Jessica's sister and soon to be husband, Jake and Gen, and Kim over for steak. Yep, that's right we didn't want to go out for steak so we went to the store and bought some great looking Rib eye. We paid about $12 for two huge steaks (probably would have been at least $20 each at a restaurant), I roasted some little potatoes and put out salad. For dessert we had fudge brownies (made with apple sauce). I didn't count the calories, but I also didn't go over board.
We woke up around 8 and got ourselves together for our hike. We actually arrived at Hagg Lake around 10 am. For lunch, I packed myself a PB2 peanut butter and jelly and Jessica wanted regular peanut butter plus watermelon and a coconut water. Headed out for our 13.1 miles with the food and 4 water bottles.  The first few miles (I think, we had no way of gaging the miles), went pretty good, even a few miles later we were doing good. Then we got half way and started to realize how freaking hot it was outside. Then we stopped for lunch around 1pm and from the looks of it we had more than half way to go. Jessica was pretty pissed that I only brought 2 sandwiches and watermelon. Frankly so was I. I should have brought more. But we moved on.  It was really nice to be able to go and just walk with her- we talked about our personal goals and our couple goals and came up with a pretty good idea (may be shared about 6 weeks).
When we had (guesstimating) 3 miles to go Jessica was SO done. She just kept saying how terrible it was.  My feet were sore but I still was enjoying the views.  I walk a bit fast than Jessica so once I got to the point of seeing the parking lot I said "I see something I think you are going to like!" She was convinced that it was the wrong parking lot. But it wasn't and we made it back to the car!  It took us 5 hours. 5 hours! Wow. That is less than 3 miles per hour. To our credit- it was a LOT different than walking on the pavement. There were hills, down trees, mushy bog areas, mud and a lot of uneven grounds. So even though its nothing to brag about- at least we completed it.  I once biked around Hagg Lake, but never hiked it.
We headed back to town and to pick up the kids. Jessica had been craving Taco-Hell and she could finally justify it today- since we burned about 1200 calories- so she ordered a bean burrito and a chicken soft taco. I came home and ate 3 left over mini  potatoes and a brownie (also left over).  Then it was off to the glasses place to get Adey fitted for her first pair of glasses. Poor kid is as blind as Jessica- well actually more blind. But not quite as blind as me. Anyhow, I was convinced she wouldn't keep them on but she did keep them on! So we got 2 frames and lenses for each for $89. And we get to pick up the completed pairs at 1:30 tomorrow!  I am so happy. Initially we were going to have to wait to buy them because we thought they were going to be $400. Thank goodness Jessica called around!
Dinner tonight was frozen pizza. We got a California kitchen pizza- 1/3rd of the pizza = 350 calories. Not to bad! (I ate a whole half of the pizza- 500 calories). Tomorrow, I am making Jessica grilled chicken breasts and a tomato, basil salsa. (I'm excited about that). For brunch tomorrow Jessica is making yogurt cups with berries and a hash brown dish. Her mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, aunt and a couple of kids are coming over for brunch.
Should be fun!
