This is for our children...their children...and their children. This is for our family...this is for us!
Originally, this blog was my wife's, but I stole it since she stopped using it. So, now it will be a place for both of us to write and journal our experiences during this journey of getting healthy. For the both of us its more than just losing weight. Yes, we both want to be thin, but more importantly we want to be around for eachother and our children for a long, long time. We want t show our children that it just isn't okay to treat what He gave us so poorly...
We have stopped making excuses and are ready to face the challenge...are you?

A Runner or a Person Who Runs?

Thank you Wikipedia: Running is a means of terrestrial locomotion allowing humans and other animals to move rapidly on foot. It is simply defined in athletics terms as a gait in which at regular points during the running cycle both feet are off the ground.
I am trying to determine if I am a runner or if I am a person who runs. How do I determine this? I went strolling online and stumbled upon several "you might be a runner if..." sentences. Here are some of my favorites:
Your heart rate is below 50 and you are not dying
You have a very distinct "watch tan""Forrest Gump" really pissed you off (like he wouldn't have gotten shin splints)
You see someone running while you are riding in your car and wish it was you.
you are actually happy about doing laundry because now you will have clean running clothes.
you decide to sleep in and skip your run, but then somehow get your run in before the day is over anyway
you always go to the sports section to look for new running gear and new running shoes first when shopping

I actually did get a little freaked out when I saw 49 as my heart rate (on my watch) one night. I checked it like 5 more times, thinking it was wrong. But it wasn't. Generally my HR is 49-50 when I am sitting down watching TV or relaxing.  There were a bunch more "you might be a runner if..." I wonder how many I need to be considered a runner. Haha. No really, I think it's a mind set, it's a life style. Sounds kind of funny as I am thinking about how dramatically different my life is now that I am a runner. Running, as I am sure I have mentioned before, has changed my life. 6 months ago I was drinking too much alcohol, eating waayyy too much food and the wrong type of food to-boot and pretty much headed for super obese. I always feared waking up one day and being 300 lbs. When I had lost weight beforehand I was sure I wouldn't gain it back- but I didn't really change my lifestyle. I only changed what I ate. I wasn't working out and I hadn't really thought the changes through.
Running gives me a chance to reflect, to remind myself of my progress and to keep myself honest- since I can't lie to myself about my distance or time.
For anyone who is reading this...are you a runner? If so, how did you come to define yourself as a runner?
